On 27 October 1962. In flight from McCoy AFB, a U-2 was shot down over Cuba by two SA-2 Guideline surface-to-air missiles, killing the pilot, Major Rudolf Anderson, Jr. Anderson was posthumously awarded the first Air Force Cross. Grant McCune Design Designed and built 3 Lockheed U-2 spy planes for the movie “Thirteen Days” two were loaded with explosives for the scene where the aircraft is hit by a surface to air missile, both were powered by Jet Cat miniature jet engines The third was a beauty that you see in all the close ups, it had all the details of the original all the way down to the static ports, vents and even real glass over recessed cameras in its belly. for the shoot it was tail mounted onto a motion control platform the performed the needed moves for the camera. we shot the flying aircraft at Victorville airfield.
