Product Description:
Spooner was delivered after a prolonged procedure by the local doctor in Milledgeville, Georgia, in December 1956, his fraternal twin brother dying during the same delivery. Coincidentally it’s the same day that a blowhard Congressman drops dead of a heart attack during an Army-Navy game in Philadelphia. The set-up and style is very Kurt Vonnegutesque as is the rest of the novel. A brillaint Navy Officer is court-martialed for messing up the burial at sea arranged by the Congressman’s widow. The coffin has no holes in it, so it floats, forcing the Officer to order his gunner to shoot the hell out of the coffin to make it sink. The grieving widow looks on and is pretty upset to the point of accusing Ottosson of molesting her on board the ship. Spooner and Ottoson meet up to create a life long crazy relationship that is the avatar of dysfunction. There’s a touch of absurdity and magic and lightheartedness in dealing with themes of death, confusion, and tragedy, but that is the way most satirical novels are structured nowadays whether they are by Don Bartheleme or Vonnegut or Richard Ford. What makes Spooner a bit different is that Dexter’s mind seems to be able to embrace all sorts of edgy styles and characters–the psychopathic ‘grotesque’ Southerner, Paris, Trout or the deeply troubled world of South Philly mobsters in Brotherly Love. He seems to breezily run through the various eras and geographies of the U.S., which makes for unpredictable reading. Like his other books, you really don’t know whay you’re getting into with Spooner except for the fact that the conflicts that arise seem to suggest that no matter how hard we try, we can never really understand the world from another’s perspective, but humanely try to help each other out of terrible situations we, ourselves, would never get into, while we feel compelled to help our fellow screwed-up loved ones. Dexter suggests love conquers the most important things, i.e., the human condition of loneliness and isolation even if we’re more or less powerless to help with ‘practical’ matters.
